Something I quite liked about the Grenville team's DH project is the flow of the content. I like how it is very user-friendly since navigation is solely clicking an arrow forward or an arrow back. I think that this offers a different experience to Neatline because of this. Something I like about Neatline is how you can explore the page in any order you want. However, I recognize how this DH project's platform is beneficial for ensuring the viewer stays on track. I liked how the presentation starts with a zoomed out map and the part 1 header, then zooms into a general location of research, and then an even more specific location. This helped me, as a viewer, follow the flow of research and gave me the context needed to understand the information I was being fed. Another benefit I see from this platform is the option of inputting elements such as class discussion questions or debate prompts in the middle of the presentation. As a presenter sharing this almost as a slideshow of sorts, this seems very helpful. Neatline doesn't really offer that from what I can tell so I enjoyed seeing how this platform offers that feature. Visually, I think I prefer the layout of Neatline with the little location bubbles and such. However, I think that I prefer the function of StoryMap. I'm interested to see if we'll be introduced to any new platforms later this quarter and look forward to comparing them, too.
Hi Audrey! I totally agree with these pros and cons of Neatline and StoryMap. I visually like the map better on Neatline; I think if many aspects of the two platforms combined, they could make a perfect one. If the map on StoryMap was like the one of Neatline with more detailed places and easier to follow visually, I think the presentation would have been much clearer. I also agree that it is nice that you can pick where you want to start in Neatline, however for the purpose of presenting, I think it made the most sense to have it in order. ReplyDeleteHey Audrey! I definitely had a lot of the same ideas about Neatline and StoryMap. I think a benefit of Neatline is, as you said, being able to see the whole map and (because of that) being able to navigate however you choose. I think it is also nice to have the timeline on the bottom of Neatline. I think Neatline offers a better "big picture" view, but StoryMap is a nicer experience actually navigating through.
