Final Project Research Update

Being completely honest, I have not made as much headway on the final project as I probably should've. I've decided that I am interested in researching one of the printing presses, specifically The North Star, abolitionist newspaper from 1847. That being said, I haven't done much research. I think that my research plan is to find general information on the newspaper, and then use the key words/concepts I find from that information to find facts specific to the prompts we were given for this topic. This includes things such as the impact of the press, its historical timeline, and context. I'm beginning to see that the hardest part of this project for me will likely be time management. In longterm projects like this, I struggle with holding myself accountable with regards to doing research ahead of time. This blog post helped remind me of the project, so I'm definitely going to get on that research now! I'm excited to read my classmates' blog posts to see their progress updates and have a gauge of where everyone else is with their research at this point in time.

  1. Hi Audrey! I have also not made a ton of progress on this project-- so we are in it together! I think, for me at least, the most difficult part about research is starting it. It sounds like you have a good strategy going for how you're going to look for sources! Wishing you the best of luck! :)

  2. Hi Audrey! We're in the same boat! Honestly, this project is much more difficult than I anticipated. Researching for the printing press is much different than for book history or for research excursion. I suggest trying to find sources about books and printing in the region your printing press is from. Good luck with your research!

  3. Hey Audrey, I'm definitely on the same page as you. At least you have established what you are interested in researching and have given some thought to your next steps. I agree that time management can be difficult. I remember pulling an all-nighter last quarter in December to finish my Neatline project. I want to make sure that doesn't happen again.

  4. Hi Audrey! I agree that accountability is one of the hardest parts of completing a project like this. It's hard to plan so far in advance when we have constant due dates. Something that really helps me is setting appointments with Kelci and Colin to have concrete working times. If you have time, I'd really suggest that you do the same! I'm also researching a printing press and they've been so helpful!
