Neatline

After attending our first Neatline session, I can confidently say that I quite like the platform. It's completely unique from anything else I've ever used, which made it pretty fun to learn! I consider myself to be a visual learner, so a platform like this that lays out all of the included information in a user-friendly way aligns with my learning style well. I enjoy putting together visuals, such as powerpoints and infographics, so one of my favorite things about Neatline was the ability to customize the style and design elements to create a project that is both informative and visually appealing. 

I would definitely consider using Neatline for a future project. It seems most effective when there are a range of dates and locations, so I hope to complete a research excursion which includes both of those. For example, our very brief in-class activity was not the best use of Neatline in my opinion. My group compiled three locations from Parvaiz's section and inputted them into the map. With this little information, the map was basically empty and the timeline was blank because the book did not provide dates. I think that Neatline seems most effective for projects like Michelle's where she compiled all of the locations and dates related to our reading list for this quarter. The map was well populated and color-coded, which made it fun to look through. Additionally, since a focus for our class is the history of the book, seeing information about when and where each novel was published was extremely interesting. For that project, the dates and locations really built off of each other to tell a story regarding the history of books around the world over time.

  1. I have to agree with you Audrey, Neatline is a completely new experience for me as well. I liked being able to choose my own style and have a degree of creative liberty nice too. Now that you have mentioned it, I want to be able to find a project idea where Neatline will really work and help not only me, but others better understand a book or topic. I personally, can't wait to see what you do with a possible future neatline project!

  2. Hi Audrey! Using Neatline was very different from other things that I have used. I enjoyed all the types of maps and markers, allowing me to customize my Neatline to my liking. I agree that sometimes Neatline is not the best method to create a project, but of course, there are uses for it! With more locations and descriptions, the Neatline exhibit looks much more detailed and full than with just a few places. I'm excited to see how we can use Neatline for future projects and if you make one, I would love to see it!

  3. Hey Audrey! It's cool to know that you're a visual learner - I am too! I wonder if you plan on incorporating any visual elements into your research excursion? Also, I agree with your ideas about the different ways Neatline can be used to present information. I would be especially interested to see Neatline used to depict the different places that ancient texts, such as Antigone, were and continue to be published.

  4. I really agree that the choice of customization and the amount of control you get over a map with markers, a timeline, and the information waypoints makes it a really great learning tool. I, however, don't think I fully have the swing of it yet. But I am hoping my next research topic is more date/location based and allows me to get some practice in.

  5. Hey Audrey! I do think that Neatline is very unique and is a far different tool from any other used. I liked getting to know that you're a visual learner and can totally see how this site would work great for your learning mode! I also agree with your comment on the customization aspect of Neatline. I think that's one of it's greatest strengths.

  6. Neatline certainly caters to visual learners. I totally agree. It seems like it can save a lot of time for a future project as well. However, some of the features like the timeline and waypoints are still a little confusing for me but I'm hoping they will make more sense in the future.
